KRS stands for Keray Rating System. The number following KRS is a number out of 10. Where 10 would be a perfect crystal. It was developed by me as a means for potential customers to have an understanding as to the quality of the product they are buying. It is important to you to get the best quality for your dollar. When buying crystals from places like Ebay or websites, be aware of things like listing or pictures that only show 1 side. Lots of crystals are skimmed from the top of a pot and therefore have a large portion of it being quite unattractive. If you are not sure about a crystal, ask the seller to send you pictures of all sides.
When grading I take the overall surface area of each side, and detract any imperfections from it on a percentage scale. Then I rate that out of 10. I have been growing bismuth crystals for well over 16 years and have seen amazing specimens that are truly unique in all aspects, including definition, cleanliness, colors and features.
Definition is how defined are the features. Are they broken, have melted edges or cracks.
Cleanliness is how the clean the crystal looks to the viewer. Does it have odd marks that seem to not belong or fit.
Colors is self explanitory. Do they appeal to you. Are they bold, shiny, vivid.
Features means are they small tight rhombic ones, or large step type, or a variety of a few. And do they look well together.
